Why Ignorance Is Your Most Powerful Ally
Today I want to let you in on a little secret.
If you’re trying to get a new business off the ground, launch a new product, or go from 5 figures on the side to 6 figures and full time, you need massive output.
Business takes work. That much is obvious.
But what might not be obvious is that ignorance is the way to achieve that output.
What most people fail to realize is that they are killing their chances of success right out of the gate simply because they are too connected, too aware of what everyone else is doing, and stuffed to the brim with tactics, techniques, and strategies.
Ironically by simply putting your head down, plugging your ears, and ignoring all the noise you’ll achieve your goals that much faster – and even better, with more joy!
The Low-Information Diet
Tim Ferriss’ book The 4 Hour Work Week has this mind blowing chapter called “The Low-Information Diet” and it starts with this game changing quote from Nobel Prize winner Herbert Simon:
“What information consumes is rather obvious: it consumes the attention of its recipients. Hence a wealth of information creates a poverty of attention.” – Herbert Simon (Nobel Prize Winner)
Tim Ferriss goes on to say that “most information is time consuming, negative, irrelevant to your goals, and outside of your influence.”
If you think about it, this describes Social Media to a T!
Straight up – if you want to create massive output in your life and business you have to severely reduce the amount of information you are consuming.
This includes books, magazines, news articles, blogs, podcasts, YouTube videos, social media, TV, going to conferences, and taking classes.
And yes, this includes MY content. If you’re only absorbing knowledge from me but not putting it into action, then get off my site and get to work!
Look, learn what you need to learn, but then shift from information consumption to output.
The Pressure To Do “All The Things”
So many small business owners I know have fallen prey to the lie that in order to achieve success they need to do “all the things” which leads to this hustle or die mentality.
Just because you see someone talking about webinars, or trip wire products, or Facebook Ads doesn’t mean you should do those things in your business.
This is true for two reasons:
- Just because a tactic works for one business doesn’t mean it will work for yours,
- Don’t assume that everyone you see is successful, so don’t copy their tactics!
The way to grow your business and increase your income is to learn the one or two strategies that work best for you and do them over and over, day in and day out.
It’s not sexy, it feels overly simplistic, but trust me – my business is based on one or two simple strategies, takes minimal hours of work each week, and generates lots of revenue.
Comparison Is The Thief Of Joy
US President Theodore Roosevelt has this great quote:
“Comparison is the thief of joy.” – Theodore Roosevelt (26th President of The United States)
And he’s absolutely right.
Take my kids for example. My daughter can have two cookies on her plate and be so happy.
But the moment she notices her sister grabbing a 3rd cookie she’s instantly dissatisfied with only two.
Her joy was immediately robbed when she saw what someone else had – and we are no different.
Every time you see someone else doing something great, something that you aren’t doing it has the potential to steal your joy and change your perspective on your situation for the worse.
Why would we do that do ourselves?
You need to be very careful who you follow, who you pay attention to, who’s email list you are on.
Here’s a little advice – stop right now, jump on your favorite social platforms and begin unfollowing anyone and everyone whose feed makes you feel “less than”.
It’s not that they are doing anything wrong, or that you don’t like them. But if their success (or apparent success) is just not good for your heart, then stop the bleeding and unfollow.
I do this all the time!
I don’t even follow my business partner because at one point seeing what he was doing in his other business made me jealous! So I got off his email list and stopped following him on social.
I love him to death but it was better for my heart.
Do whatever it takes my friend.
This will help you get back to focusing on the work in front of you and help you appreciate all the good gifts that God has given you.
We’ll call it “Operation No More Joy Stealing” and it will be our little secret :-)
Who Cares What They Are Doing?
Remember, your time and brain power are limited.
Free up more of both by learning to cultivate selective ignorance as Tim Ferriss would say.
Put her head down, do your work, create massive output, and you will see results.
Who cares what everyone else is doing? What YOU are doing for your customers or clients is all that matters!
