The real "secret" is the mastermind principle

While mastermind groups have dated back to the time of Jesus (remember his 12 disciples?) the term became more widely used in the last 100 years thanks to Napoleon Hill and his bestselling book "Think and Grow Rich". Here is how he defines a mastermind group: “a coordination of knowledge and effort, in a spirit of harmony, between two or more people, for the attainment of a definite purpose”

Hill also elaborates on the power of this kind of group when he says: “No two minds ever come together without thereby creating a third, invisible, intangible force which may be likened to a third mind” As weird as that "third mind" concept might sound, that is the true power of collaboration.

You can only see things from one perspective, yours. But when you get even just one other perspective in the room you don't just double your perspectives you exponentially increase them as your shared experience and points of view can help each other see things that neither of you could see on your own.

Brilliant business moguls like Andrew Carnegie and Henry Ford understood this and relied heavily on their own mastermind groups to become two of the wealthiest entrepreneurs of the 20th century. Even President Franklin Roosevelt had his own mastermind he called his "brain trust" as well as many "think tanks" who consulted with the US government on critical matters.

You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with...

Jim Rohn said something scary (but powerful) when he said "you are the average of the five people you spend the most time with." Who you hang out with rubs off on you, for better or for worse.

So the question is, are you spending regular time with people who are successful, encouraging, and who hold you to a higher standard of excellence in business and life? Or are you hanging around people who are negative, selfish, or at best dreaming mediocre dreams and seeing mediocre results?

Tony Robbins put it bluntly when he said: "Your life will be the direct reflection of the expectations of your peer group."

Wow! If that's true then the natural question might be - do you need to upgrade your peer group?
