Food Stamps And A Global Recession
I was never the entrepreneur type.
I was too scared to venture out on my own, even if I wanted to. I like the stability that comes from a steady paycheck too much!
But then 2009 happened.
After moving to Florida with my wife to help a friend start a church I got laid off from my new job - because the company ran out of money!
We had just bought our first house and had our first baby, and now we had no income. Great - so much for that "stable" paycheck.
And trying to find decent paying work during a global recession proved to be difficult.
So I went back to freelance music work, trying to get as many gigs as I could but I brought in so little money that we actually qualified for government assistance in the form of food stamps (SNAPS as they call it now).

This was the lowest point in my life.
Here I was, blessed to be healthy, able, and college educated. But I didn't make enough money to support my family and I needed "handouts" from my government.
It was in that season of defeat that I began to blog and make YouTube videos.
Something that I thought would just be a little side project that might bring me some more freelance work turned into something else entirely!
Serving Others And Seven Figures
But after 18 long months of creating content and trying to figure out this online business thing I started to see momentum.
We went from $500 a month to $5,000 a month. All from my online business!
It was incredible. I thought I had arrived at the finish line. But it was only the beginning.
Since 2009, The Recording Revolution (by God’s grace!) has grown from a little blog that only my brother and mom read (and neither of them do music!) to a 7 figure business that serves 20,000+ paying customers and reaches millions of students each year in over 200 countries!
Now I don't HAVE to do freelance work if I don't want to - because my online business makes more money than I do :-)
Am I special? Did I figure out some magic formula?
Nope.
All I've done for the past decade is serve people.
And truthfully that's all business comes down to.
You know what else? This “others focused” mindset helps take the burden off of you.
You don’t have to be perfect, or have the perfect idea. You just need to focus on serving others!
Honestly – the thing I’m most proud of regarding my business is that it doesn’t take over my life – rather it serves it!
Because of my business, I am able to spend time with my wife and daughters, volunteer at my church, get regular sleep, and focus on being as generous as I can with the blessings I’ve been given.
Me and my "ladies" spent a month in France without working - all because of my online business!
